Wester Ross and Lochalsh 40 Coast and Country Walks Pocket Guidebook

Wester Ross and Lochalsh 40 Coast and Country Walks Pocket Guidebook

by: Paul and Helen Webster
Wester Ross and Lochalsh are home to some of Europe's finest coastal and mountain scenery. Stretching up the west coast of Scotland from the Glenelg peninsula, this region's many highlights include picturesque villages such as Plockton, the rugged hills of Applecross and Torridon, the white sandy beaches around Gairloch and a vast inland area of little-visited rocky peaks, known to walkers as 'The Great wilderness'. To the north is the bustling ferry port of Ullapool and, beyond, the unique landscape of Coigach.

Wester Ross and Lochalsh are amongst the most popular areas for walks in the Scottish Highlands. The Lochalsh peninsula between the shores of Loch Duich and Loch Carron offers varied walking from villages such as Plockton as well as the region's main town at Kyle of Lochalsh. Across the dramatic Mam Ratagan pass is the remote and secluded Glenelg peninsula, a tranquil and peaceful haven far from busy routes. Further north is Applecross and Lochcarron, with mountains that yield nothing in ruggedness to their more famous counterparts in Torridon, as well as attractive fishing villages and forest walks.

The walks in this handy pocket guide are mainly circular short to moderate walks, most of which can be undertaken in half a day. The few linear walks involve retracing your steps, so you will always end where you started. Each walk entry begins with at-a-glance details of distance, time, terrain, parking and public transport access where available. Clear route finding instructions are provided together with simple overview sketch maps, but OS Explorer map sheet numbers are also provided. The text also includes brief notes on features of interest along the way and colour photographs.
