Ashdown Forest Perambulation Guidebook

Ashdown Forest Perambulation Guidebook

by: Terry Owen and Peter Anderson
This route, developed by the authors, is a 42 mile circular walk 'over and around' Ashdown Forest in East Sussex. Ashdown Forest lies on a sandstone ridge in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but it is in complete contrast to the remainder of the area both in landscape and height. The Forest is the largest area of lowland heath in the south east of England, but approximately one third is woodland; mainly oak and beech.

The guide divides the route into four sections which can be comfortably completed in four days, or even two if you are prepared to walk 20 miles a day. However the route is versatile and can be adapted to fit individual needs. Each of the four sections can be used to reach an outlying part of the Forest with a self plotted return route to create a circular walk.

The guide provides detailed route finding instructions, but as there are no sketch maps it would be advisable to carry the OS Explorer map sheet 135 which covers the whole of the route. The guide also includes lots of interesting background information about the history, flora and fauna of the Forest, so by the time you finish the walk you should have an intimate knowledge and understanding of this unique area. Colour photographs also illustrate features described in the text.
