Howardian Hills and Vale of York Walking Guidebook

Howardian Hills and Vale of York Walking Guidebook

by: Paul Hannon
The Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty sits to the north of the magnificent cathedral city of York, on the other side of which the Vale of York occupies the heart of Yorkshire. This compact guide, one of the popular 'Walking in Yorkshire' series, contains 25 great walks, well-illustrated and concisely described. They lead you through some rolling landscapes of woodland, parkland and farmland, and by the banks of myriad rivers in the Vale of York.

Walk through history at Sheriff Hutton Castle, Nunnington Hall, Kirkham Priory and Beningbrough Hall, admire the splendour of Castle Howard, and gaze in awe from York's Medieval city walls. Explore the natural delights of Skipwith Common, Naburn Ings and Heslington Common, and the peaceful banks of the rivers Ouse, Nidd, Derwent, Rye, Wharfe, Foss, Swale and Ure. Discover the little towns of Tadcaster and Boroughbridge, and a wealth of colourful Howardian villages such as Terrington, Coxwold, Hovingham, Welburn, Barton-le-Street and Ampleforth.

The book begins with a short introduction to the area. Each walk entry begins with a box giving distance, start location with grid reference and post code, OS Explorer map sheet number. A summary describes the features of the walk. This is followed by detailed navigation instructions and a coloured outline sketch map of the route. This text is interspersed with notes on points of interest printed in mauve italics to clearly separate it from the route instructions. The book includes many colour photographs.
