Lady Anne's Way

Lady Anne's Way Walking Guidebook

Lady Anne's Way Walking Guidebook

by: Sheila Gordon
Lady Anne's Way is a long distance trail of 100 miles from Skipton Castle to Broughham Castle at Penrith following in the footsteps of the remarkable Lady Anne Clifford. The walk is one of great beauty and historical interest; it passes through the wonders of the Yorkshire Dales with its unspoilt villages and its limestone pavements and progresses through the remote and rugged fell-side of Mallerstang, to enter Cumbria and the romantic delights and hidden haunts of the Eden Valley. This is truly a walk for connoisseurs of the wild open country of the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria.

The origins of the route are best described by its creator, the guide's author. 'The inspiration for Lady Anne's Way came whilst attending a lecture, where a reference was made to Lady Anne's Highway at Mallerstang. On hearing that this great lady owned many impressive and historic castles scattered all over northern England, I was immediately struck with the idea of a long distance path that would link these beautiful buildings. Scrutiny of the OS maps showed that a walk of 100 miles could be worked out, and so the route was born'. The guide describes the route in six stages, beginning at Skipton, Grassington, Buckden, Hawes, Kirkby Stephen and Appleby.

The book is beautifully produced with excellent highly detailed large scale strip maps and comprehensive descriptions of the entire route. These are interspersed with fascinating historical background, brought together with 40 delightful drawings from celebrated artist Frank Gordon.
