Sandstone Trail OS Map Guide

Sandstone Trail OS Map Guide

by: Northern Eye
This map is essentially an Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25000 scale map of the area covering the complete Sandstone Trail route. But it has the additional benefit of having the map in a book format. This innovative concept makes it a perfect companion for walkers on the Trail as the book format is more convenient and easier to use while outside compared with a large paper map. It is also more cost effective, reducing the need to purchase several OS Explorer sheets necessary for a linear route.

The complete Sandstone Trail is covered in 23 pages of full colour mapping, beginning from Frodsham, and travelling in a southerly direction to Whitchurch. The path is clearly marked on the maps and there are symbols showing facilities at the main towns and villages. There is also a page with useful contact information and a short introduction with a photographic mosaic.

Cheshire's Sandstone Trail is probably the best middle-distance walk in Northwest England. The Trail follows the elevated ridge of sandstone hills, that rise dramatically above the Cheshire Plain, for 34 miles across this green county, from the Mersey estuary to north rural Shropshire.

Along the way you will experience the very best of Cheshire: everchanging views and lofty panoramas over Wales and the Pennines; wooded escarpments, sandstone cliffs, viewpoints and caves; oak dotted pastures and farmland; vast and ancient sun-dappled Delamere Forest; prehistoric hillforts, dramatic medieval and Victorian castles, half-timbered black and white and sandstone manor houses, farms and historic inns; Roman roads, sunken green lanes, packhorse routes and saltways; tranquil rivers, streams and rural canals; mosses and meres; heathland and heather.
