Two Saints Way Walking Guidebook

Two Saints Way Walking Guidebook

by: David Pott
The Two Saints Way is a 92-mile long distance walking route between the cathedral cities of Chester and Lichfield. It has been set up in such a way as to recover some of the aspects that were important in medieval pilgrimage and to apply them to a contemporary context. The route is described in both directions. Waymarking shows 'The Way of St Chad' from Chester to Lichfield, and 'The Way of St Werburgh' from Lichfield to Chester.

Commencing at Chester the route is described in four colour coded sections each designed to link religious buildings, with the cathedrals at the beginning and end of the route and churches dedicated to St Mary at the two middle section end points as follows:
Chester to Nantwich - 23.5 miles
Nantwich to Stoke-on-Trent - 25.5 miles
Stoke-on-Trent to Stafford - 23 miles
Stafford to Lichfield - 20 miles

Each of these sections has its own chapter with maps and directions to guide you. There are also 4 stages in each section, making 16 stages in all, between 3 and 8 miles long. They are designed to coincide with places where public transport is available. A separate 7-day walking itinerary is also provided.

The book provides an historical perspective of the lives of St Chad and St Werburgh and of the cathedrals. The guide contains a wealth of additional fascinating information on many features of interest encountered during the journey. There is also comprehensive practical information for planning the walk and coloured OS map extracts to support the navigation text. Plenty of excellent colour photographs illustrate the book.
