Tyne and Wear Heritage Way

Tyne and Wear Heritage Way

author: John Grundy
The Tyne and Wear Heritage Way is an 80-mile route taking in the rich historic and industrial heritage of the area. The route is broken down into nine convenient sections that you can walk at any time in any order. Each section can be walked in a day and the start and finish points of each section can be reached by using public transport.

The route uses a combination of field and rural footpaths, denes, waggon-ways, coastal paths, and some country parks. It passes through wooded valleys like Holywell Dene and over the high ground of the Cleadon Hills with distant views as far as Cheviot on a clear day. It takes in the dramatic coastline near Marsden Rock, the busy Fish Quay at North Shields, the beaches of Whitley Bay and South Shields, and the riverbanks of the Tyne and the Wear.

Each section in the book begins with a panel giving details of start location with grid reference, distance, OS Explorer map sheet number, any stiles, terrain, public transport, and refreshment options. The navigation text is given in clear numbered paragraphs referencing full colour OS Explorer map extracts with the paragraph numbers and route highlighted.

The sections are as Follows:

Seaton Sluice to Burradon - 9 miles
