Walking Close to Sherwood Forest Guidebook

Walking Close to Sherwood Forest Guidebook

by: Clive Brown
One of a range of 'no frills' local walking guide booklets which admirably achieve their objective of getting you out in the countryside amongst beautiful scenery on carefully chosen routes full of interest. The directions are clear and precise and the pencil drawn sketch maps are particularly attractive as well as practical.

The origin of the name Sherwood is 'wood belonging to the shire'; the woodland once covered most of the land between Nottingham, Mansfield, Worksop and the Great North Road; one fifth of Nottinghamshire. The remnants are still magnificent, but the forest is now a shadow of its former glory, after centuries of clearance for agriculture and the felling of timber for ships, houses and fuel.

This guide describes twelve varied and interesting circular walks within the Sherwood Forest area. The walks are between 4 and 9 miles in length.

The walk locations are:
Ravenshead and Newstead Park - 9 miles
Edwinstowe and the Major Oak - 5 miles
Clipstone and Vicar Water Country Park - 7 miles
Blidworth and Friar Tuck's Well - 4.75 miles
Clumber Park and Thoresby Border - 5.75 miles
Langwith and Scarcliffe Park - 8 miles
Market Warsop and The Lings - 6.5 miles
Sherwood Pines Forest Park - 7 miles
Market Warsop and Mansfield Woodhouse - 8.25 miles
Lidgett and Rufford Country Park - 5.75 miles
Hexgreave Park and Edingley - 4 miles or 2.25 miles
Meden Vale and Hazel Gap - 5 miles
