Walking the Old Ways of Herefordshire Guidebook

Walking the Old Ways of Herefordshire Guidebook

by: Andy and Karen Johnson
The walks in this delightful book have been chosen with the aim of exploring Herefordshire's past, with each walk passing or visiting a number of features about which some background information is given. These include churches, castle sites, deserted medieval villages, landscaping activity, quarrying, battle sites, dovecotes, hillforts, Iron Age farmsteads, Saxon dykes and ditches, individual farms and buildings, squatter settlements, almshouses, sculpture, burial sites, canals and disused railway lines. Some of these sites can only be reached on foot.

The routes have also been chosen to help you explore Herefordshire's present, to breath its good air, from south to north, from west to east, from quiet river valleys to airy hilltops, from ancient woodland to meadows and fields, from remote moorland to the historic streets of the county towns, and of course Hereford itself.

The 52 circular walks range from 2.5 to 9.5 miles in length, with the majority being between 3.5 and 6.5 miles. Each walk has a numbered coloured sketch map and detailed navigation instructions, together with boxed background information about features en route. A brief summary at the beginning of each walk describes the terrain and features. The book is illustrated with over 450 superb colour photographs and has a full index. The walks are grouped into seven geographical areas.
